Baba is Hint: A Spoiler-Free Guide - Chasm

Rules you should know

To get here, you need to have cleared at least six worlds. I won’t assume you’ve cleared everything up to now beyond those six, but I will assume you’ve learned everything from previous worlds, including the following:

  • Group (Cavern 05, 06, 09, 10)

  • Facing (Cavern 11, 12)

Chasm

And this is my favorite world of the main game!

And this is my favorite world of the main game!

The Initial Chasm Map.

The Initial Chasm Map.

You need to complete a whopping 9 levels here! If you don’t want to try to complete everything, divide your attention evenly between each of the three sections. The top branch teaches More, the bottom branch All, and the middle branch Word. Each of these ideas are important late-game concepts, so don’t skip this world, even if you’ve already unlocked the final areas of the game.

I recommend solving at least A and C on the bottom branch; B, D, and F from the top branch; and Extras 01-04. Those will give you the stuff you need to know.

Remember that hints are invisible until the text is highlighted. Bold text discusses the rules. Italic text discusses all objects of the named type. Regular text discusses the actual instances. Text “in quotes” refers to the actual text in the level.

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: noun All

All is another one of those tricky nouns like Empty or Group. What does All refer to - every single possible object in the whole entire game or something else? Make an X is All statement and see what happens. How about All is [noun]? Or All is [property]?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: There is no real way to get rid of the Walls, but maybe you can move them out of the way.

Chasm B: Siege

Map 9-B.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: property More

What happens if you make Rock is More? Does this effect happen only once? Are there things which block further duplication?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Getting across the Water will be easy. How about getting across the Belt? Is there any way to get a Baba more than one space away at a time?

Chasm C: Elusive Condition

Map 9-C.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

In the old version of this level, everything was sort of mirror image swapped. I’m not sure what the change did, or what possible unintended solution it patched out. Oh well. It’s still pretty easy.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Is there a way to prevent You from a transformation?

Chasm D: Treasury

Map 9-D.jpg

Difficulty: **
Hints

Gentle Nudge: What things will prevent a Key from spawning when it is More?

Bigger Nudge: Can you get just a single Key to be spawned somewhere it can be pushed to the Door?

Chasm E: Looking For A Heart

Map 9-E.jpg

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

This level is particularly frustrating, not only because it’s difficult, but because the important space you are given to work with is restrictive. If you’re struggling, you may in fact be on the right track, but you have to be a little more efficient with the space.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Wait, there's no Love in the level. Why do you have the text "Love"?

Bigger Nudge: There is a nice big open hallway exactly two spaces above "All." What a coincidence.

Another Big Nudge: You can't fish "All" out of there but you can push it one space out of the way.

Specific Hint: You need to create multiple of something to open the Doors for you.

Chasm F: Lava Flood

Map 9-F.jpg

Difficulty: **
Hints

Gentle Nudge: Which objects prevent Lava from growing again?

Specific Hint: You'll need to stop the Lava somehow while you break up Flag is Melt.

Chasm G: Entropy

About the Level

This level has been changed ever so slightly. At the top left, next to the “Stop,” there is another “Stop.” This second “Stop” is not used in any rule - it can’t because of its position - but it means that once you place a piece of text to the right of “All,” that piece of text is stuck there for the rest of the level.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Your first step is to get rid of the Walls. Yes, all of them.

Bigger Nudge: Remember your solution to Chasm C. Could you do something similar here?

Another Big Nudge: Think of which piece of text must go the right of "All." Which is more useful, Is or Has?

Specific Hint: All is Shut starts off as a hindrance, but it's actually what you need to get out from the Walls.

Special Note: Once you get past the Walls, you should have a far greater idea of what to do. Either you have only Rocks or only Babas, so you'll need to use a rule outside to make at least one of each.

Chasm H: Floodgates

About the Level

Here’s one of my favorites, though it doesn’t feel much like a level from this game - feels like some other puzzle game.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Remember which objects block More? How many of them do have at your disposal?

Bigger Nudge: There is no possible way to cover every Skull.

Specific Hint: You don't just need to block the Star's growth - you need to direct it.

Chasm I: Lonely Sight

Map 9-I.jpg

Difficulty: **
About the Level

Personally, I found this level easy to figure out, though the solution involves many steps. If you’re struggling, you may actually be on the right track, but you’ll need to be more careful where you put your text.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You have access to two tiles of "Baba." There's a good reason for this.

Specific Hint: You need to perform a series of transformations using some of your Babas.

Chasm Extra 1: Metacognition

About the Level

  • New property: Word

This level got a major change - the whole compartment on the top left. Frankly, it was overdue, because it really helps you understand what the heck Word means. I had to solve it with an older version and I ended up googling what Word was even supposed to do. But you might figure it out simply by walking Baba to the right. What happens? Why do you think that happens?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You need Key is Open, but if you use the text "Key," you'll block off the Door.

Bigger Nudge: Isn't it a coincidence how the "Is Open" can be placed next to the Door?

Chasm Extra 2: Multitool

Map 9-Ex2.jpg

Difficulty: **
Hints

Gentle Nudge: Is Keke of any use to you?

Bigger Nudge: Your first move is to break up Rock is Hot, but you need Rock to be Hot again later. How are you going to do it?

Chasm Extra 3: Broken

Map 9-Ex3.jpg

About the Level

Aside from Cavern 14, this may be the only level with Text is not Push. And unlike the other level, this one doesn’t have a rule which allows you to move text a different way.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: So you can't move text around normally, but surely this level doesn't expect you to keep all the rules intact. Is there another object which functions a little bit like Text?

Bigger Nudge: Why do you suppose you have two Rocks?

Specific Hint: If you can make one particular rule change to make Text pushable again, the solution should become obvious. Only one change needs to be made.

Chasm Extra 4: Alley

Map 9-Ex4.jpg

Difficulty: ****
About the Level

Okay, this is one of those levels... everything depends on the first few moves. If you’re stuck, you might have the right idea but your first moves were wrong.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Start by trying to get to the right side of the level, to break Rock and Water is Stop. What rules need to simultaneously exist in order to do that?

Bigger Nudge: Water will end up being Sink. Maybe it shouldn't be Word?

Even Bigger Nudge: If you make Rock is Push horizontally, you won't be able to salvage "Rock" for Rock is Word.

Specific Hint: Everything should fall into place if you can make Rock is Push, Water is Push, and Rock is Word simultaneously.

Chasm Extra 5: Keke And The Star

Map 9-Ex5.jpg

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

  • New and extremely important: property Sleep

Just kidding. It’s only in this level, and if there were no “Sleep” tile this level wouldn’t change at all. But Keke is cute.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Breaking up Keke is Sleep shouldn't be difficult. You need to make Keke is You somehow.

Bigger Nudge: Don't you think it's convenient how there's a nice horizontal hallway that aligns perfectly with "Sleep"?

Another Big Nudge: Isn't it convenient how "Is Float" is situated just one space below the hallway?

Specific Hint: Something needs to be You, Float, and Word simultaneously.

Chasm 6: Visiting Baba

Map 9-Ex6.jpg

About the Level

So the “intended” solution for this level is, I think, harder to pull off than the one I came up with. I’ll include a hint to the intended solution as well as my own. Who knows if there will be a patch later to prevent my solution, but until then, here we go!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Fungus needs to be Push in order to win this level. How can you make a second Fungus is Push rule?

Bigger Nudge: Why do you suppose there is a Skull separating the upper and lower areas? You can't walk across, but something else can go on there.

Specific Hint: Can you make both Rock and Fungus be Word at the same time?

My Solution: Remember your solution to Cavern 14? Maybe something else can overlap.

Chasm 7: Automated Doors

Map 9-Ex7.jpg

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

This level is famously difficult and is also a serious contender for my absolute favorite.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Baba will enter one of the two chambers and never leave.

Bigger Nudge: The Rock will enter the other chamber and never leave.

Another Big Nudge: Where do you need to put that "Not"?

Specific Hint #1: To win this level, You must become Flag somehow. First, figure out how to make that Flag, then turn it into You.

Specific Hint #2: Your first move in the level should be the placement of the "Not."

World Complete

Clearing the Chasm opens nothing new. If it’s your seventh cleared world, you unlock the final area of the overworld, though. This final area is not important to finishing the game normally and is only important in the endgame. Don’t go there until you’ve at least attempted every world and learned what you need. If you’ve been following this guide you have only one world left: the Mountaintop.
