Baba is Hint: A Spoiler-Free Guide - Deep Forest

Rules you should know

If you’re reading this, I will assume you’ve cleared the first three worlds for sure, and that you’ve done enough of the Forest of Fall to know the following rules:

  • Tele (Fall 01, 03, 04, 05)

  • Pull (Fall 02, 06, 07)

  • How to use Text is [X] rules (Fall A-E)

  • Not (Fall 10-12)

Deep Forest

The Forest is the one with the Tree. Shocking, I know.

The Forest is the one with the Tree. Shocking, I know.

Initial Forest Map.

Initial Forest Map.

You have to finish 9 of the 20 levels to clear the Deep Forest. Make sure you clear a few levels from each little section, blue and green. The blue levels teach about Shift. The green levels to the left teach directional properties, and the green ones to the right teach Swap. While the directional properties only find occasional use, both Shift and Swap appear over and over from here on out.

So, here are the required levels I recommend: 01, 02, 06, 08, 10, 03, 07, A, and B. That will clear the world and teach you the basics of all the important rules, and only 03 should be any problem. Beyond that, levels 04, 05, 09, and C aren’t too bad. Level 11 might be too difficult for your first visit here but you need to come back to it eventually if you ever want to understand puzzles in the late game.

Remember that hints are invisible until the text is highlighted. Bold text discusses the rules. Italic text discusses all objects of the named type. Regular text discusses the actual instances. Text “in quotes” refers to the actual text in the level.

Forest 01: Renovating

Map 5-1.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: noun Belt, the gray tiles with the arrows pointing down. The arrows can be pointing in any direction, depending on the object’s facing. This is supposed to look like a conveyor belt. Also new property Shift.

Belt and Shift seem to work together very logically. What happens when Keke moves onto a Belt? If Keke stands still on the Belt, how does Shift work? How about if you try to move Keke while on the Belt?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Wall isn't Stop.

Bigger Nudge: Is You the only thing that can be Shift-ed on a Belt?

Forest 02: Toolshed

Difficulty: **
About the Level

Occasionally in these worlds you’ll see levels which do not feature the new material. In this level, there are no rules featuring any property beyond what you’d find in The Lake or earlier. You may be tempted to think, because it’s in world 5, that it requires some advanced world 5 trick, but there’s nothing here you haven’t seen before.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: What is stopping you from getting through the Door?

Bigger Nudge: How are you going to get access to "Win"?

Bonus: It's possible to make Wall is Key. It isn't necessary to win the level but it makes for an interesting solution!

Forest 03: Keep Out!

Difficulty: ****
About the Level

  • New material: nouns Tree and Bug. The Tree always looks like a pine tree. The Bug looks like a beetle, sort of, but cuter.

This level has a reputation for being tricky. Its solution is really simple, but it requires a bit of lateral thinking and understanding of the relationship between Pull and Shift that you probably have not considered. But with so few objects you have access to, it shouldn’t take too long to try everything. No idea is too stupid.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: It looks like the only thing really preventing you from getting the Tree up to the Fungus is the corner of that hedge hallway.

Bigger Nudge: If that Belt were in a different spot, that would certainly help.

Specific Hint: From the start, try pulling that Tree across the Belt. As soon you step on the Belt, move up. What happens? Does this perhaps tell you how to solve the level?

Forest 04: Baba Doesn’t Respond

Difficulty: **
About the Level

  • New material: noun Reed, which I don’t recall appearing in any other level...

This level teaches a trick with Move that forms the basis of some more complicated tricks required in the late game. Don’t overcomplicate things! You do have to plan ahead with Move, but not that much.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: The rules Door is Shut and Open and Reed is Defeat must be formed in order to finish this level.

Bigger Nudge: Is there a way you can create those rules while Keke is stationed between the Reed and the Door?

Specific Hint: You'll need to create a pathway of sorts using the Belts.

Forest 05: Patrol

Map 5-5.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

This was a fun little level and not too difficult. If you’ve caught on to the logic of this game, oftentimes levels are set up to make you think a particular, “normal,” solution is the answer - but really you’re going to do something entirely different.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: The arrangement of that hallway makes you think you have three objects to overcome - two Doors and the Skulls. But really only the Skulls are going to be a problem.

Bigger Nudge: Your solution to Ruins 04 may be useful here.

Forest 06: Canyon

Map 5-6.jpg

Difficulty: **
About the Level

  • New material: noun Flower, actually three little flowers. You’ll see them a lot but you don’t often get access to the noun. Also new property Up.

Pay special attention to Up as a property. There are some things you might expect it to do that it does not. Make sure you try out a few possibilities in this level so you don’t get any wrong ideas.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: First step, neutralize the Belt. Is there a way you can make it possible to cross back and forth - without breaking up Belt is Shift?

Bigger Nudge: Only Ghost is Push, but you need to push something else. Is there another way you can move objects around?

Specific Hint: You need to somehow get the Ghost onto the Belt in order to get it out from that hallway.

Forest 07: Concrete Goals

Map 5-7.jpg

Difficulty: **
Hints

Gentle Nudge: It looks like the main challenge is getting in (and out) of the compartment with the Flag. That's not the challenge.

Bigger Nudge: Flag is Stop, but you can make Flag is Push and push it onto the Belts. Why?

Specific Hint: You is not Stop.

Forest 08: Victory in the Open

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • “New” material: property Right.

Right is technically new but it functions in the same vein as Up. Also, I really do think this level is a one-star difficulty level. If you’d never played this level, and just looked at the picture, you could probably figure it out. But it’s a bit fiddly and tedious to get it right.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You don't have enough "Is" words to make all sentences simultaneously, so you'll have to juggle.

Forest 09: Moving Floor

Difficulty: **
Hints

Gentle Nudge: You have two "Is" words, yet there's no way to make two "Is" statements. What could that "Is" be for?

Bigger Nudge: The Flags will only work to fill the dead ends so long as Flag is Push.

Specific Hint: At first you should only do the exact amount of prep needed to push "Win" out to the right. Then go back and do the rest.

Forest 10: Supermarket

Map 5-10.jpg

Difficulty: ***
Hints

Gentle Nudge: First, just try to get "Up" out of that compartment and back to the central area.

Bigger Nudge: You will have to push something up to form both rules Belt is Wall and Flag is Win. Where does Baba need to be when that happens?

Another Nudge: Remember that Belt remains Right or Up after you disconnect the rule.

Specific Hint: Your last move will be to create Belt is Up on the right side of the level. How many extra pieces aren't being used in that sentence?

Forest 11: Lock the Door

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

Another famously difficult level, but this one I don’t recommend you pass up. It teaches a trick that’s vital to know for the endgame.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: First, get the Bug out of that corner.

Bigger Nudge: Your solution to Forest 06 will help you do this first part.

Specific Hint: Once you have the Bug out, you need to replicate your solution to Forest 04. But you have no "Move." How can you do this?

Forest 12: Skull House

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

Here’s another famously difficult level. (In a recent update, this level was moved to an Extra Level, and an easier version replaces this one. I’ll update that when this reaches the Switch version.)

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You need to both open the Door and sink something in a patch of Water. Yet you only have one free object to do this with...

Bigger Nudge: When you create an X is Y transformation, what exactly happens? Does the object actually change? Or does X get destroyed and replaced with Y?

Specific Hint: Can you make that Rock into two separate objects?

Forest 13: Factory

Difficulty: ***
About the Level

An odd level which fits perfectly in with the style of levels from the Temple Ruins, and it teaches an interesting quirk when Weak and Defeat interact.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Somehow, you will need to produce a large number of Keys to open the row of six Doors. Where can you get those Keys?

Bigger Nudge: You need five more Keys and you have nine Boxes, yet somehow you have the exact number of Boxes you need to solve the puzzle.

Specific Hint: You need to destroy (some of) the Bugs. Make sure you don't destroy too many, as you'll need some Boxes left over.

Forest 14: Tiny Pasture

Map 5-14.jpg

Difficulty: ***
About the Level

For some reason I lucked into this solution pretty easily, but I recognize it requires a leap in logic that you might not pick up on immediately.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: If that bottom Flag weren't pressed up against the wall, this solution would be very easy. Find a way to move that Flag.

Bigger Nudge: Can you get Keke into the top-right corner of the hallway while she's facing down?

Specific Hint: You don't actually need to teleport "Win." You'll teleport something else.

Forest A: Nearly

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: property Swap

Oh boy, Swap. This property confuses a lot of players, myself included, simply because it requires you to think a step or two (or several) ahead. At least this level should be easy enough to figure out, so spend some time getting the hang of Swap. What happens when Baba moves onto the Flag? How about the Grass? Or the Text?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Okay, if you actually need a hint for this one... there's something you can mess with that isn't the rules Baba is You or Flag is Win.

Forest B: Not Quite

Difficulty: *
Hints

Gentle Nudge: You can actually do pretty much the same thing as you did in Forest A, with one extra step at the beginning.

Forest C: Passing Through

Map 5-C.jpg

Difficulty: **
About the Level

Personally, I didn’t find anything tricky about this level, but something about the nouns used and the way it’s set up can be a little discombobulating. The reminder to “Wait” in the lower right corner should tell you what you’ll be doing.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Why doesn't it work to just have Keke walk back and forth through the Grass?

Bigger Nudge: Skull is not Swap.

Forest D: Salvage

Map 5-D.jpg

Difficulty: ****
About the Level

Oh this level. You may even solve it quickly yourself without realizing what on earth just happened. The solution isn’t all that much in the way of lateral thinking but it’s easy to not notice why it works, and consequently you might not think of it. At least, I didn’t. I just tried a combination of rules to see what would happen.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You first need access to the "Swap" tile. What properties do you have access to that will allow this?

Bigger Nudge: Baba won't leave the pen of Skulls to get the "Swap," but he will leave to get the Flag.

Specific Hint: You need to somehow swap a single Skull two spaces out.

Forest E: Insulation

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

Insulation is another one of those levels which used to have many solutions, but they’ve been patched out. Maybe there are still some unintended solutions, but I don’t know them. Let me know if you find one. In the meantime, I’ll only post the intended - I think - solution.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You can't free Keke is Push or Up from the Wall. That means every rule you make, once you do what you need, will be discarded forever.

Bigger Nudge: The existence of the rule Skull is Swap has likely given you the impression you need to swap out sections of the Wall, as you did in Forest C and D. As far as I know, this will never work.

Specific Hint: You need to swap Baba out of the pen without swapping the Walls.

Forest Extra 1: Crumbling Floor

Map 5-X1.jpg

Difficulty: ****
About the Level

I hope you don’t struggle too much with this one because once you solve it you’ll feel really dumb. At least, I did.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: What exactly has changed in this level from Forest 09? Yes, you don't have the extra "Is" anymore, but is there another change? A change to the arrangement of the Hedge walls?

Bigger Nudge: This solution is only possible because two rows of Belts are in the same vertical corridor.

Specific Hint: How did you get the Text/Flag into the little dead-ends in Forest 09? Must you approach this puzzle from the same direction?

World Complete

Clearing the Deep Forest unlocks the path to the Chasm, but you can’t go there until you’ve cleared six worlds. Chances are you aren’t that far yet. If you’ve been clearing each world along the way, then this is the fifth world, which will unlock the gate leading to the west. Don’t led all the different paths confuse you, though. I suggest just going in order, so next is Rocket Trip - the space world. However, at this point you’ve learned everything you need to know to solve the final level and complete the game if you wish.

In the meantime, do these hints work? Anything spoil too much? Do the hints actually help or are they too vague? Maybe you thought of a really good hint yourself? Send them to me. (Don’t comment them below.) You can find me @keyofw on Twitter or keyofw on Reddit. DM me anytime.
