Baba is Hint: A Spoiler-Free Guide - Flower Garden

Rules you should know

To get here, you only need to have cleared the first three worlds. However, I’ll assume you’ve also looked into worlds four, five, and six enough to understand all the rules up until now, including the following:

  • Empty (Space 01, 02, 03, 05, 08)

  • Fall (Space 04, 06, 07)

Flower Garden

Though you can go here as soon as you complete the third world, but you need to know rules up through the fifth, so don’t come here too early.

It may be one of the smallest worlds, but it’s not even slightly easy.

It may be one of the smallest worlds, but it’s not even slightly easy.

You only need to complete 6 levels! Only two of them are easy! Good luck.

You’ll notice the levels are divided with yellow-green on the left and dark green on the right. The yellow-green levels teach Make, and the dark green ones teach On. Both of these are a bit tricky to figure out. In fact, I found this the hardest world in the entire game. It was the last part of the main game I completed. You may have a different experience, but if you are struggling here know you’re not alone.

Honestly, I don’t have recommendations on which levels to finish. Just clear any of them you can, making sure you do at least one Make and one On puzzle. The good news is that the first puzzle of each is a nice and easy tutorial.

Remember that hints are invisible until the text is highlighted. Bold text discusses the rules. Italic text discusses all objects of the named type. Regular text discusses the actual instances. Text “in quotes” refers to the actual text in the level.

About the Level

Luckily, the first couple of levels in this world are - for this point in the game - quite easy. Enjoy it while you can.

  • New material: connecting word On.

Okay, so there was one level before which had On, but the Garden is where you really learn how it works. The sentence Keke on Grass is Defeat should help a little. For example, you don’t die immediately, so it’s not the same as Keke is Defeat. Something else has to happen first.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Something has to change into Key. But if you just make X is Key, the level becomes unwinnable.

Bigger Nudge: Keke on Grass will do things to Keke. Grass on Keke will do things to Grass.

About the Level

Luckily, the first couple of levels in this world are - for this point in the game - quite easy. Enjoy it while you can.

  • New material: connecting word Make.

The concept of Make shouldn’t be all that difficult to understand, but levels with Make certainly spiral out of control if you’re not careful. Create something like Flag make Moon or Moon make Flag. What happens? Is the other object created only if there’s an Empty space available?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You have to create Baba is Win, which will also make the Grass unable to cross. Can you prepare something ahead of time?

Bigger Nudge: It seems like overkill to make Grass both Shut and Defeat. Why would both rules be necessary?

Garden 03: Sorting Facility

About the Level

The thing about On is it has a couple of particular quirks that allow you to pull off some neat tricks. This level teaches you one of those very important tricks which you need to remember for later.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: To get the Key, you need Belt is Shift. To get the Key to the Door, Belt can't be Shift.

Bigger Nudge: You can't unmake the phrase Belt is Shift once it is made, but that doesn't mean you can't modify it somehow.

Specific Hint: You need some phrase which makes Belt is Shift conditionally active.

About the Level

Welcome to hell.

Okay, so the level isn’t the worst, but it and the rest of the Garden are really going to stretch your brain. Brute forcing answers won’t work, so if something isn’t proving fruitful, it’s very likely you’re not even close to the solution.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Once you cross the Belt, you better be sure you've done all your prep because there's no going back.

Bigger Nudge: You don't need to sink anything in the Water under the word "Flag." You only need to push the word up.

Even Bigger Nudge: If you have two objects pushed into a single tile of Water at once, the Water will sink both. That is, if both objects don't have the property Float.

Specific Hint: You need to find a way to combine the Rock with a piece of Text, but only after you cross the Belt.

About the Level

  • New material: noun Hand

This level is on its third or so iteration. Turns out there were alternate solutions that didn’t use the “On,” so this level has been patched to force you to use the intended solution. Now this level is famously difficult. Cheers!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Either Baba or the Hand must push "Is Defeat" up to create both Door is Shut and Lava is Defeat. Then both Baba and the Hand must somehow get to the Door.

Bigger Nudge: You are required to make at least one "On" statement to win this level, as in X on Y is Z. What would the X be in that statement? The Y? What about Z?

Specific Hint: Assuming that something were on the Skull and needed to get to the Door, what path would it take? How many turns would it need to make?

About the Level

This is the updated version of Garden 06. It’s about the same in difficulty, but with less opportunities to completely break the level.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Where are you going to get Keys from?

Bigger Nudge: You'll have to cross the Belt at some point. The Keys will need to cross, too, but will they cross at the Belt?

Specific Hint #1: Start by finding a use for the Belt placed near "Open." Does that Belt have to stay in that spot?

Specific Hint #2 (provided by me): Why is Keke Float?

About the Level

After the nightmare that was levels 04 and 06, this one is relatively simple. It’s not easy, but it is definitely simple.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Pillar is Pillar, but not Rock is Rock. This might make you think a transformation is necessary, but that's not true.

Another Light Nudge: Pillar is Stop, but Rock is not. This does mean you will have to use each object slightly differently.

Bigger Nudge: The amount of space just below the Water is the exact amount of space necessary to solve this puzzle. You do not have one extra open space.

Specific Hint: You will never sink enough to clear a path through the Water. You need to neutralize the statement Water is Sink with something.

Garden 08: Jaywalkers United

About the Level

It may be a little confusing what happens in this level, so I’ll explain. Every time you (Baba) move, you create a piece of Grass under you, and every time Keke moves, they create a Tile. Both of them will Defeat you. This means if you ever cross your own path (which is hard to do as Grass is Stop), you die, and if you stand still for one turn, you die. You must keep moving and never retrace your steps.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You can't possibly get to the Rock and Flag fast enough to win the simple way.

Bigger Nudge: You also cannot possibly block Keke from getting to the Text.

Specific Hint: You need to adjust the Text so that Keke doesn't break it up when they get there. From that point the level should be simple.

Garden 09: Overgrowth

About the Level

  • New material: noun Fruit, the apple to the left of Baba.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Once you leave the Grass, there's no going back.

Bigger Nudge: You can't change Fruit into something else. Is there another transformation you could do?

Specific Hint: What sentence can you make which will allow You to walk over the Key one direction, but push the Key out the other way?

Garden 10: Adventures

About the Level

This level is a serious contender for my least favorite. It’s difficult to even tell what you’re supposed to be doing, so try everything until something comes to mind.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Defeat overrides Win. If Ice and Flag is Defeat, then you'll lose even if Ice is Win.

Bigger Nudge: You can get the wall of Skulls out of the way. Not only will this make navigating easier, but it might give you an idea of what to do. Figure that part out first.

Specific Hint: For the very end, you will create X is Move. This should set off a chain reaction that pushes "Defeat" up before "Win" gets pushed to the left.

Garden Extra 1: Out At Sea

About the Level

This was the very last level in the early game that I solved, and I solved it after getting through a lot of the late game. It’s totally fine to come back to this one later.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: There is no way back across the Belt. Do all your prep on the left side of the Belt. Once you cross, there should be no tricky moves required.

Another Light Push: All the Text will remain on the left side of the Belt.

Bigger Nudge: There's a reason Lava is Lava, but not Ice is Ice. That reason isn't because you are to transform Ice into Lava. It's something else.

Specific Hint #1: You need a way to make both Lava is Push and Ice is Push simultaneously.

Specific Hint #2: You need to first transform the Ice, then transform that something back into Ice.

Garden Extra 2: Secret Garden

About the Level

Curiously enough, this level didn’t bother me too much. But that’s because, in Garden 04, I was so lost and confused I was trying literally everything and did a weird thing that ended up being the solution to this level. If you didn’t go through what I went through, though, this level is pretty tricky.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: To get rid of the Skull, you need both a Keke and a Rock on it. Where can you get a Keke?

Bigger Nudge: Do you have an extraneous piece of Text that can be turned into Keke?

Specific Hint: After getting past the Skull, you need to do pretty much the same thing you did in Garden 04.

World Complete

Flower Garden opens no new worlds upon clearing. But if you’ve been clearing everything in order, you now have seven flowers, which unlocks the top-center gate. Beyond that gate are some levels which are the entrance to the endgame. Not only is there no need to do those levels to complete the game, but you really shouldn’t go to the endgame until you’ve learned all the rules from every single world. So, go to the Volcanic Cavern next.
