Baba is Hint: A Spoiler-Free Guide - Forest of Fall

Rules you should know

If you’re reading this, you’ll definitely have cleared through Solitary Island, and I will also assume you’ve cleared Temple Ruins. You should know everything from previous posts, including the following:

  • Weak (Ruins 01, 05, and 09)

  • Has (Ruins 02-06)

Clearing the first three worlds was probably not all that difficult for you. Maybe you can’t yet fully complete them, but solving enough to get by was a breeze. That ends now. At this point you will have some difficulty even clearing worlds without being forced to get through a brain-bender or two.

The good news is you only need to clear 7 of the 20 levels in Forest of Fall. Try to solve levels in each of the three areas, red, pink, and yellow. The red areas deal with the properties Tele and Pull, the pink ones with special use of Text, and the yellow with the word Not.

If you can only get through 7 levels for now, I suggest the following: 01, Extra 1, 02, either 03 or 05, 04, 10, and 12. Except for either 03 or 05, these are the easiest ones and you’ll learn the basics of the important concepts. But if you can swing it, try to solve all the red levels (with the possible exception of 08), yellow levels 10, 12, and the extra, and pink levels A, C, and E.

Remember that hints are invisible until the text is highlighted. Bold text discusses the rules. Italic text discusses all objects of the named type. Regular text discusses the actual instances. Text “in quotes” refers to the actual text in the level.

Fall 01: Hop

About the Level

  • New material: noun Fence, property Tele

Walk Baba onto the Love. What happens to Baba? What if you wait (stand still for a turn)? Does Tele work on things that aren’t Baba?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: It looks like the purpose of Love is merely to get you across the river. That assumption will make it impossible to win the level.

Bigger Nudge: What exactly needs to be teleported away in order to get you access to the Flag?


Fall 02: Grand Stream

About the Level

  • New material: property Pull

You’ve probably worked out that Pull is the opposite of Push. What differences are there with a Push object and a Pull object? What similarities are there?

Also, there are two solutions to this level. The first time I played I solved it in the what I assume is the intended way, but there is an alternate solution which is much, much easier.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Flag is Win, but there's no Flag. How can you create one?

Bigger Nudge: The Key does in fact need to cross the river.

Bonus, alternate solution: One Key is nice, but two Keys is better.

Fall 03: Rocky Road

About the Level

  • New material: Foliage

So, Foliage looks like leaves. It turns out there is a different tile for Leaf, and this one isn’t it. Foliage is three leaves on one tile. Good, now we’re all confused. Also, this entire world has a brownish tint on everything - it’s not just you.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Rock has two properties. Which one takes precendence, if Baba walks onto a Rock?

Bigger Nudge: If only you were on the other side of that Foliage...

Specific Hint: You need to break up Rock's properties, then recreate them when you cross to the other side.


Fall 04: Telephone

Gentle Nudge: Tele works so long as there are at least two instances of the object which is Tele.


Fall 05: Haunt

About the Level

  • New material: noun Leaf

Leaf is the single, yellow leaf. So, Leaf is yellow and Foliage is brown. Leaf is just one leaf and Foliage is three. That should forever clear this up.

This level stumped me for the longest time because it is much, much simpler than it looks. Careful not to overthink things.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You can't move "Love" or "Win," so you need to put "Is" in there somehow. There are two "Is" words in the level. Which one is safe to remove?

Bigger Nudge: Don't bother trying to teleport the Leaf away.

Specific Hint: You need to find a way to remove the "Is" from Leaf is Defeat.


Fall 06: Crate Square

Hints

Gentle Nudge: It's only possible to make two adjustments to the rules. You'll need to do both of those.

Bigger Nudge: If you try to pull those Boxes apart, what happens? Does only one Box move at a time?

Specific Hint: There are five spaces between "Win" and the Flag, and you have one Baba and four Boxes. What a coincidence.


Fall 07: Ghost Friend

About the Level

Apparently this level has gone through multiple changes. Once the final update is complete and no more changes are being made I’ll update this entry.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Yes, only Baba can fish out the "Key" from that chamber.

Bigger Nudge: Does the Flag move every time Baba moves, or every time you make a movement input?

Specific Hint #1: You need to make Baba move somehow without making any movement input.

Specific Hint #2: Baba is Move seems like a good idea, but it won't work.


Fall 08: Ghost Guard

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Which is more likely? You getting the Ghost down to where the Key is, or you getting the Key up to the Ghost.

Bigger Nudge: You can't push the Key, but what can you push?

Specific Hint: You need to recreate your solution to Fall 03, pretty much.


Fall 09: Leaf Chamber

About the Level

  • New material: noun Fungus. Just a mushroom. If you can’t find it among all the other brown, it is at the top center-ish of the level.

Perhaps I lucked into the solution for this because this level seemed far easier than the previous few. But it’s the execution that’s the real trouble, not learning what to do.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: If there were no Foliage, how would you solve this level?

Bigger Nudge: Remember that Defeat only destroys objects which are You.

Specific Hint: You will need both Leaves, in different paths, to pull the Fungus out.


Fall 10: Not There

About the Level

  • New material: connecting word Not

The word Not negates a sentence in English. How does it work here? What happens when you put “Not” in front of a noun? How about in front of a property?

Also, this level is so simple for this point in the game that it’s hard to give hints without spoiling the whole thing. I will try.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: If a rule X is Y exists at the same time as X is not Y, which takes precedence?


Fall 11: Catch

About the Level

The word Not can make for some very confusing statements. Anytime you make one, really look to see what has happened - don’t just assume you know! This level makes at least two types of Not statements that you will need to understand for later levels.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: The only way to win this level is indeed to push "Baba is" to the right. But this ends the level - why?

Bigger Nudge: Is there somewhere better for that "Not" in the phrase Rock is not Push?

Specific Hint: Literally everything that isn't a Rock is Not Rock.


Fall 12: Dead End

About the Level

  • New material: noun Me. Me is not always You. Me is the purple guy in the center of the pond. Also the connecting word On, sort of.

The connecting word On is technically new here, but it isn’t taught until world 7. Suffice to say for now that to win this level, you need to be on Me while also Flag is You.

Gentle Nudge: Lots of rules! Which ones can you push around? Which ones can't be pushed around but can still be amended?


Fall A: Literacy

About the Level

Levels Fall A-E don’t teach any new words, but they do teach you that you can and should mess with “Text.”

Hints

Gentle Nudge: How many objects can you push around? Are you sure Me and the Rock are the only ones?

Bigger Nudge: Wall is not Stop.

Specific Hint: It's curious how most rules outside the pen are so far away from you... except for Wall is Wall.


Fall B: Broken Playground

About the Level

It’s okay to leave this level for later. It features a couple of pretty tricky moves that don’t get used until much later. Knowing what to do is only half the battle - the other half is figuring out the movements required to pull it off.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Don't bother trying to teleport any text into the compartment in the upper right. Something else has to happen.

Bigger Nudge: Is there any part of your solution to Fall A that you could use here?

Specific Hint: Make a list of all the things that can be You. If you haven't figured out all of those things, you can't solve the level.


Fall C: Fetching

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You know that somehow, you will have to break up Skull is Defeat.

Bigger Nudge: Some earlier levels have probably given you the habit of never pushing any piece of text into a corner or against a wall, where you can't retrieve it. This time you have to...

Specific Hint: You have to create a rule in a corner, and then somehow get it out of that corner.


Fall D: Scenic Pond

Enjoy this level. You’ll see it a lot!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Keke doesn't exist yet in this level. But you have the text "Keke." What can you do with it?

Bigger Nudge: Isn't it strange that there's an "Is Float" just hanging out there? And that there's one square of Water right where the noun would go?

Specific Hint: You need to create the rule Baba is Float, but you'll never push the text "Baba" into the pen in the lower right.


Fall E: Skeletal Door

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You will have one of two possible sets of rules - either Baba is You and Text is Push, or Text is You and Baba is Push.

Bigger Nudge: How can you put Baba on the Skulls without her dying?

Specific Hint: If Baba crosses the Skulls, you will lose at least one piece of Text. Is there any piece you can safely lose?


Fall Extra 1: Jump

About the Level

This level is basically Fall 01, with the major difference of the Flag being on your side of the river.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: The river serves a slightly different purpose this time around...

Specific Hint: The only thing which should be teleported is Baba.

Fall Extra 3: Deep Pond

About the Level

This is the second iteration of “Scenic Pond,” and it won’t be the last. I hope you keep track of this solution.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You no longer have access to the lower right pen or the rule Float. But other rules were changed to accommodate this. Which ones?

Bigger Nudge: Can you make two Babas? What does that allow you to do?

Specific Hint: You need to find a way to make Baba has Baba.


World Complete!

Clearing Forest of Fall opens nothing new, but does give you a much needed flower. You should have already cleared the Ruins as well, so I recommend going to the Deep Forest next. If this is the third world you clear, then you’ll also unlock the final level, which I don’t recommend going to yet.
