Baba is Hint: A Spoiler-Free Guide - Rocket Trip

Rules you should know

In order to get here, you definitely have to clear the first three worlds. I won’t assume you cleared Forest of Fall and Deep Forest, but you should have gone through enough of them to learn the rules, including the following:

  • Shift (Forest 01, 03, 04, 07)

  • Up and Right (Forest 06, 08, 10), and by extrapolation, if you ever see Down or Left you’d know what that means too.

  • Swap (Forest A-C)

I won’t assume you know the trick behind Forest 11 yet, but I’ll remind you here because this will be important.

Rocket Trip

You only need to finish 8 levels, but there are 15, including the extras, so you need to complete a lot of them! The world is divided in half. The left side features levels teaching the Empty noun, and the right side the Fall property. You pretty much have to do at least one from each side.

I recommend completing levels 01-08, simply because they aren’t too difficult. The first 5 levels are crazy easy, but then the difficulty ramps up sharply.

Remember that hints are invisible until the text is highlighted. Bold text discusses the rules. Italic text discusses all objects of the named type. Regular text discusses the actual instances. Text “in quotes” refers to the actual text in the level.

Space 01: Empty

Map 6-1.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: noun Cloud - looks a lot like Water but it isn’t. Also noun Empty.

Empty sort of does what you think. What happens when it is the first noun in a statement, such as Empty is Cloud? What happens when it has a property, as in Empty is Stop? How about if it’s the second noun, as in Baba is Empty?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Honestly? Okay, there is literally only one or two feasible rules you can make that I didn't describe above, so try those.

Space 02: Lonely Flag

Map 6-2.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

The most important thing to learn from this level is that Anni is Best.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You can easily get rid of Door. You can't get rid of Wall. Find another way in the pen.

Space 03: Babas Are You

Map 6-3.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

It might not be totally clear what’s happening in this level and it quickly gets overwhelming. So I’ll explain here. When you move Baba, the space she leaves behind is now Empty (the rest of the level is occupied by the dark blue clouds, or stars, or moons, etc.). Since Empty is Baba, a new Baba appears in that Empty space. Move enough times and you’ll overrun the level with Babas.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: What if you could create a new Empty space above the Wall?

Space 04: Please Hold My Key

Map 6-4.jpg

About the Level

  • New material: property Fall

Weird question: Anyone out there play that old shareware game Goldpusher (from the 90s)? If so, send me a message @keyofw on Twitter/Reddit/whatever. I want to know I’m not the only one. I bring this up because the Fall mechanic makes levels such as this almost exactly like levels in Golpusher.

Anyway, I hope Fall is obvious, but if not, just push the Key and see what happens. Why doesn’t it fall through Cloud?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: What else can the Key rest on?

Specific Hint: Don't make Key is Open until the very end.

Space 05: Horror Story

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: noun Rocket. It’s the... it’s the rocket.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You only have one option for your first move.

Bigger Nudge: When Empty is You, you can't just win by moving an Empty square onto the Flag because that wouldn't be an Empty square anymore.

Space 06: Aiming High

Map 6-6.jpg

About the Level

  • New material: nouns Star and Moon. Both are yellow shape outlines.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You have two Babas for a reason. Actually, you have two Babas for two reasons!

Bigger Nudge: You have access to the "Is" which should be in Dust is Win. There's a reason for that, too.

Specific Hint: You need both Babas to carry the Moon to the Star. What does Baba need to be?

Space 07: Trio

Map 6-7.jpg

About the Level

This might be my favorite level in this world. Please don’t look at the hints unless you’ve really, honestly tried to figure it out!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Baba doesn't need to cross the row of Skulls, yet you need to break up Skull is Defeat anyway.

Bigger Nudge: Keke is standing on Me. Can Keke walk on Me?

Specific Hint: Keke need to push the word "Defeat" to the left. What is the path Keke will take, and how will you get them on that path?

Space 08: Bottleneck

Map 6-8.jpg

Difficulty: ****
About the Level

And this is my least favorite.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: This is similar to Forest 04 and 11 in that you need to create Flag is Win while Baba has already crossed the Skull in the lower right.

Bigger Nudge: Try Empty is Push and notice that it usually traps you in place. Why is this? Is there a way to have Empty is Push and still move around? Why does that work?

Specific Hint: The Rocket needs to be pushed onto the Belt while Baba is all the way to the right.

Space 09: Platformer

Map 6-9.jpg

Difficulty: ****
Hints

Gentle Nudge: Which object should open the Door? Better yet, which ones can't possibly open the Door?

Bigger Nudge: How many objects can hold up Keke at one time?

Specific Hint: You can't do your business if there's both a UFO and a Key.

Space 10: The Pit

Map 6-10.jpg

About the Level

This level got an update recently. Instead of two rows of Skulls, there was just one long column that patrolled back and forth. That’s the only change I know of. I suppose it was changed because the original version gave players the wrong idea of how to get into the pit.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Can you get the Star through the Skulls and into the pit? Can you get both the Star and the Moon into the pit?

Bigger Nudge: Think back to your solution to Space 06. How did you handle the Moon then?

Specific Hint: The prep for this level involves some precise placement of the text so your very last move involves creating the final rule while getting You into the pit.

Space 11: Heavy Words

Map 6-11.jpg

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

Just so you know, in the most recent patch, the cloud square at the top has been removed. It isn’t used in the solution so you can ignore this old picture.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: There is only one possible win condition. What is it? What other rule is required to get the Rocket onto that tile?

Bigger Nudge: How many spaces across does it take to write a rule horizontally. Where in this level do you have that much space? Look for all of those spaces.

Specific Hint: Create Dust is Weak first and use it as a bridge.

Space 12: Guardians

Map 6-12.jpg

About the Level

Like “The Pit,” this level also got a slight change which didn’t change the solution in the slightest, but definitely made sure you couldn’t come to certain wrong conclusions. There used to be a small chamber around the “Win” tile, which may have given people the impression you were somehow supposed to get Baba up there. The addition of Ufo has Ufo lets you know there’s no point trying to eliminate them, if such a thing had even been possible. Frankly, all these changes would have helped me solving this level, but I did it before the change.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: If Empty is Pull, Empty becomes solid.

Bigger Nudge: You're given all this Ice for a reason.

Specific Hint: You need to be able to pull out "Win," but you need Baba to be able to move around while you do it.

Space 13: Sky Hold

Map 6-13.jpg

Difficulty: ***
Hints

Gentle Nudge: The arrangment of the initial rules may give you an impression of how you will get the Key. That assumption is likely wrong. What else can be Open and/or Shut?

Bigger Nudge: Have you noticed that when you Open a Shut object, the Open object never actually overlaps with the Shut object? The Open object just has to be moving toward it.

Specific Hint: You can't move Empty onto the Box, but...

Space Extra 1: Existential Crisis

Map 6-Ex3.png

Difficulty: ***
About the Level

This level has yet to appear on the Switch version.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Rocket is Push for some reason.

Bigger Nudge: Empty cannot move onto the Flag, and Moon is Defeat. How will you get Baba in there?

Specific Hint: Look at your solution to Space 05. What else can be You? Why do you have access to "Push"?

Space Extra 2: Heavy Cloud

Map 6-Ex.jpg

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

Okay, this time the Cloud square is important because the Star is inside, but... that’s it. The Clouds don’t otherwise do anything. I know I shouldn’t be this worked up about them but so rarely do levels in this game feature unnecessary objects that I can’t believe the developers didn’t have some plans for this.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Now that the Star is up there, what can you do with it you couldn't do before?

Bigger Nudge: In order to get to the Star, you need Dust is Weak. If you create that rule in the same place as before, you've already lost. Find another way.

Specific Hint: You will need to form Dust is Weak twice, each time in a different spot and a different orientation. Beyond that this level is solved roughly the same as Space 11.

World Complete

Clearing this world doesn’t reveal anything new. But if you’ve been clearing everything up to this point you now have six flowers, which will unlock the Chasm. But you should go to the Flower Garden next, as it’s the next world and I’m doing this guide in order. Personally, I found the Flower Garden to be the hardest world (I cleared it last), so if you can’t clear it on your first trip it’s enough to understand the basic rules.

In the meantime, do these hints work? Anything spoil too much? Do the hints actually help or are they too vague? Maybe you thought of a really good hint yourself? Send them to me. (Don’t comment them below.) You can find me @keyofw on Twitter or keyofw on Reddit. DM me anytime.
