Baba is Hint: a Spoiler-free Guide - Solitary Island

Rules you should know

If you’re reading this page, I’ll assume you have cleared The Lake. I won’t assume you have fully completed the area, but you should have finished enough to know everything from the Overworld, plus the following:

  • And (Lake 01 and 02): The first level tells you what [Noun] is [Property1] and [Property2] means. The second level tells you what [Noun1] and [Noun2] is [Property] means.

  • Move (Lake 03): It’s okay if you only have a cursory understanding of this as you get just one level. This world will give you more chances to learn it.

  • Open and Shut (Lake 06, 07, and 10)

  • Transformations (Lake 08 and 09): This is [Noun1] is [Noun2] or [Noun1] is [Noun1].

  • How to create two statements with one noun (Lake 05). This should also apply to making two statements with one property.

If any of the rules don’t make sense, revisit the appropriate levels.

Solitary Island

Not that you have a choice where to go.

Not that you have a choice where to go.

Initial Island Map.

Initial Island Map.

To clear this world, you need to clear 8 of the 18 levels. I recommend finishing through level 09. Levels 10-13 are a bit tricky so you might want to come back later. The extra levels are just that - extra. Solve them if you like, but don’t forget to go through at least level 09.

The green levels teach you about Float, and the red ones give you more info on Move.

Remember that hints are invisible until the text is highlighted. Bold text discusses the rules. Italic text discusses all objects of the named type. Regular text discusses the actual instances. Text “in quotes” refers to the actual text in the level.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: The space to the left of "Violet" looks empty.

Island 01: Float

About the Level

  • New material: noun Float.

Look at how Baba seems to Float in mid-air. Try floating over the Walls, the Rocks, and the Flag. Does everything work the same way? Some things don’t seem to apply to an object with Float, but others do. Can you determine what that specific thing is?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: This level looks almost exactly like the opening level. Maybe you've made the assumption you should win it the same way?

Island 02: Warm River

Map 2-2.jpg

About the Level

If you didn’t get everything about Float, this level gives you some more information. Look at how anything with Float interacts with both non-Float and other Float objects. Even if you figure out the solution quickly, just try things out and see what happens.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: You can't change Skull is Float. How can Baba pass by?

Bigger Nudge: If Baba is Float and Water is not, you can cross. Is there another way to cross?

Island 03: Bridge Building

Map 2-3.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: noun Text.

That’s right, you can even manipulate the rules applying to Text. It seems that Text is Push is always active, but other rules can be added on. Text is Float is a common one to see.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: If you could just push both Rocks into the Water, that would make this level really easy.

Bigger Nudge: Maybe Push is the wrong property to focus on.

Island 04: Bridge Building?

About the Level

Levels which look like a previous puzzle with one small difference are often solved entirely differently. How to discover that solution is to look at exactly what has changed. That change is the key.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: What is the exact difference between this level and the previous?

Bigger Nudge: X used to be Y in the previous level. Now Z is Y in this level. What is X?

Island 05: Victory Spring

About the Level

  • New material: Cog

Most of the rules are placed along the top of the level so you can’t break them up. But you conspiciously still have access to them.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: To get "Win" out of the pond, you'll need to remove at least three tiles of Water.

Bigger Nudge: How many objects do you have access to that you can Sink in the Water?

Island 06: Research Facility

About the Level

  • New noun: Bolt

This level was added after the initial release of the game. My guess is that it was added to help teach a trick with Move that might have been introduced too quickly before.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Imagine your solution if Bolt is Melt did not exist. So since Bolt is Melt does exist, how should you adjust your solution?

Bigger Nudge: When something is Move, you don't need to personally put it where you need it. It'll go on its own.

Island 07: Assembly Team

Map 2-7.jpg

Difficulty: *
About the Level

  • New material: nouns Robot and Pipe. Should be obvious which is which.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: The vertical alignment of the Robots makes the obvious solution impossible. Is there a way to amend this?

Bigger Nudge: Why is "Baba" on your side of the river?

Island 08: Tiny Pond

Map 2-8.jpg

Difficulty: ****
Hints

Gentle Nudge: If you are controlling only one instance when it is destroyed, it's game over.

Bigger Nudge: You only need to remove one piece of Water to get "Win" out of the pond.

Specific Hint: You start with Baba, Flag, and Key. That's three kinds of objects. You can't win this level if you have three kinds of objects.

Island 09: Catch the Thief!

Map 2-9.jpg

Difficulty: **
About the Level

The original version of this level is a bit different. The pen of Skulls used to be one tile wide, which allowed for a fun and quirky solution that the devs obviously didn’t want. Their intended solution is not changed at all by a two-tile wide Skull wall. In fact, it’s possible with any width of Skulls.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: The Robot can, and will, cross the Skulls just fine.

Bigger Nudge: The Robot can also push "Win" up, but I don't recommend that you use a Robot.

Island 10: Wireless Connection

Map 2-10.jpg

Difficulty: ****
About the Level

  • New material: noun Bog - like Water and Lava, another liquid obstacle, this time puke green.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: What do you think the win condition will say? What will that sentence be?

Bigger Nudge: Which side of the bog will you spell the win condition?

Another Big Nudge: Which exact words need to be added to the sentence as it stands initially in order to make ___ is Win?

Specific Hint: You have access to a Robot and Cog to manipulate. Exactly how many words do you need to create the win condition?

Island 11: Prison

About the Level

In the original game, there was a different level here, and it was famously difficult. That level has been moved to an extra and this put in its place. Both levels feature the same trick, but this one is easier to pull off. This trick is very easy... provided you already know how it is done. If this level gives you trouble, leave and come back. You aren’t dumb for not getting it, and you can complete the game without ever learning it.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: It looks like the only way out of the pen is to somehow break up Wall is Stop.

Bigger Nudge: The very first thing you should try doing is pushing Keke around. Why can't you? What happens instead?

Island 12: Evaporating River

Map 2-12.jpg

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

There is a lot here, but only a few rules can be pushed around at all or manipulated. Don’t bother trying to change things that can’t be changed!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Which rules can you push around? Which ones can you not push, but you can still manipulate somehow?

Bigger Nudge: Why are there three Skulls in a row? What does this arrangement prevent? Has this arrangement given you an assumption about the direction you will approach the word "Flag"?

Specific Hint: Find a way to have exactly one fewer Skull.

Island Extra 1: Boiling River

Map 2-E1.jpg

Difficulty: **
About the Level

This level is almost exactly the same as Island 02, so it asks you to learn something new about the same concept while performing a very different solution.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: It seems redundant to have two separate statements about Baba.

Island Extra 2: Bridges?

Map 2-E2.jpg

Difficulty: **
About the Level

Both rules from Island 03 and 04 are in effect at the same time. There, I saved you the trouble of figuring out the difference!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Which exact objects in this level will Sink into the Water? Which ones won't?

Island Extra 3: Tiny Isle

Map 2-E3.jpg

Difficulty: *****
About the Level

This one stumped me, personally, for a very long time. It was about this point when I truly realized I had to think outside the box and come up with entirely different solutions!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: If you want to get "Win" out from the pond, you'd need to remove two tiles of Water. Is this even possible?

Bigger Nudge: Either your solution for this level will be, step for step, exactly like the previous, or if that doesn't work you need to start over from square one.

Specific Hint: This level would be unsolvable if the "Win" tile were moved even one space to the right or up.

Island Extra 4: Dim Signal

Map 2-E4.jpg

Difficulty: ***
About the Level

  • New material, kind of: noun Ice. We’ve seen actual tiles of Ice in other levels, but this is the first time we see the word... and there’s no actual tiles of Ice in the level.

You’ll notice I gave this level fewer difficulty stars than Island 10. That’s because I believe the logical leap required to solve this one is not as large, once you already know the solution to Island 10. If you were to try to solve this one before finishing Island 10 (which isn’t possible), it would be much harder.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Look at your solution to Island 10. Were there any leftover pieces, and if so, how many?

Bigger Nudge: How will your win condition look different from than of Island 10?

Specific Hint: You need to find a way to use extra pieces to use one of your Move objects twice.

Bonus: You can also solve this puzzle using the Robot and Cog once, as in Island 10. Notice how many exact spaces you have from the left side of the river to the word "Win."

Island Extra 5: Dungeon

Map 2-E5.jpg

Difficulty: **
About the Level

Yes, the difficulty rating is correct. If you solved Island 11, the logical leap needed to solve this one is small.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: If there is no "Push" available, how can you move both Baba and Keke?

World Complete!

Once you clear this world, two paths open to you. The upper path leads to the third world, Temple Ruins. The lower path leads to the fourth world, Forest of Fall. While you can certainly clear the later worlds in whichever order you like, I really don’t recommend trying to do these two out of order. You need to understand the concepts from the Ruins in order to get through Forest of Fall. Not only that, but the Ruins is much, much easier.
