Baba is Hint: A Spoiler-Free Guide - Volcanic Cavern

Rules you should know

Just to get here, you need to have cleared five worlds. The first three are required, but then you can clear any two of the Forest of Fall, Deep Forest, Rocket Trip, or Flower Garden. I’ll assume you’ve done enough of the first seven worlds to know all the rules, including:

  • Make (Garden 02, 06)

  • On (Garden 01, 03, 04)


Volcanic Cavern

Note: This world has been completely rearranged. If your levels are in a different order, you’re playing on an older version or a Switch version that has yet to receive the update.

You need to complete 9 of 15 levels to finish this world. There are three types of levels and one special outlier. The red levels don’t teach anything new, but they feature new ways to use old ideas. The brown levels at the bottom teach the Group noun. The yellow levels teach Facing. And that dark red outlier level features a trick with Text that will be used extensively in the endgame and nowhere else.

My level recommendations are 01-06, then 08, 11, and 12. They are essentially the easiest levels. If you can complete 14, that’s great, but you don’t need it to complete the game normally. If you want to see the endgame, though, you better come back to solve it eventually.

Remember that hints are invisible until the text is highlighted. Bold text discusses the rules. Italic text discusses all objects of the named type. Regular text discusses the actual instances. Text “in quotes” refers to the actual text in the level.

Cavern 01: Tour

About the Level

This level used to be Cavern 02, but it was moved here as it is a much better and easier intro to the world.

  • New material: nouns Fire, Cliff

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Keke cannot cross the fire. You needs to be Baba.

Bigger Nudge: Don't create Baba is You horizontally. Find a way to make it vertically.

Specific Hint: Is there a way You can switch from Keke to Baba while you're in the lower half of the level?


Cavern 02: Peril at Every Turn

About the Level

This used to be Cavern 03. It has not changed, except for being put somewhere else.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: This level is designed to make you start a wild goose chase on the solution. What looks like the obvious route should be avoided.

Bigger Nudge: You have two Babas in order to do something very specific, and it's not to sacrifice one of them.

Specific Hint: You have to dig "Keke" out without losing either Baba.


Cavern 03: Pillarwork

About the Level

This is a new level added in a recent patch. It replaces “Fireplace,” which was a much easier level.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: What do you suppose needs to be Fall? Is that related to how you will push "Grass" down?

Bigger Nudge: Why do you suppose you have access to "Pull"?

Specific Hint: You need to find a way to move upwards even if Baba is Fall.


Cavern 04: Mouse Hole

About the Level

This used to be Cavern 04. I guess it was a little bit too difficult for the introductory puzzle.

  • New material: noun Bat

Hints

Gentle Nudge: First, just get the Key out of that little dead end. Have you been given an item which will help you do that?

Bigger Nudge: You will never get the Key into the hall with the Rock. Find a way to get the Rock out.

Specific Hint: You can't push the Rock onto the Key - they'll just swap places. You need to swap the Key onto the Rock somehow, using an intermediary object.


Cavern 05: Torn Apart

About the Level

  • New material: noun Group

I wish there were more levels with Group. This and three others in this world are literally the only times you’ll see it, but it’s a cool word. Do you notice how there is no statement Baba is You, yet you’re still controlling Baba? Why is that? What is the word Group doing for you?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Baba is Group and Group is You is all just another way to write a simpler phrase.

Bigger Nudge: If you can create the exact phrase Baba is You, then you'll have three extra words to use.


Cavern 06: Vital Ingredients

Hints

Gentle Nudge: No Text should cross the Belt. There's not enough room on that side.

Bigger Nudge: To open the Doors, you need something to be both Push and Open. How do you normally get one object to have both properties?

Specific Hint: More than one object can be Group.


Cavern 07: Backstage

About the Level

This was the last level I solved in this world, and for good reason! There are a lot of steps required and nothing is obvious. You might have an epiphany about one thing but then get stuck somewhere else. Feel free to solve this level in stages - do one part, then leave and come back and try the next part with a fresh mind.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: How will you create the phrase Flag is Win? What steps are required to get something in that lower hallway?

Bigger Nudge: You might think that, by pushing Baba is You one space to the left, you can have something else safely Fall into the lower hallway. And you're right, you can do that. But then you can't beat the level.

Specific Hint: You first need to get Baba is You across the Belt to the right.


Cavern 08: The Heist

Difficulty: ****
About the Level

This one was difficulty for me, but once I’d finished I really liked it. I liked it a lot more than the On levels in the Garden.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Somehow, you must get some Text from the top area to the bottom in order to make X is Open. What will X be?

Bigger Nudge: Your solution to Fall B may be useful here.

Specific Hint: Whatever is Open does not exist yet. You can create it. In fact, you can create it twice!


Cavern 09: Join the Crew

Difficulty: ***
About the Level

I found the solution to this one simple enough and solved it almost on accident, but it does require a bit of finicky and precise movement, so make of that what you will.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: First, you have to get access to the "Bat." Put all the Text you can into the central area.

Bigger Nudge: The only way to get rid of the Bats is to make them You.

Specific Hint: You need to make both Bat and something else into Group at the same time.


Cavern 10: Automation

About the Level

And now, the best and last of the Group levels in the whole game.

  • New material: noun Statue

Plenty of levels have had Statues in them, but this might be the only one where you get access to the noun. The Statues are up at the top of the level, in the hallway near the Ice.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: How many objects can you control at one time with Group?

Bigger Nudge: One of your final moves will be to create Ice is Melt.

Specific Hint: How can you put something on the Ice without it being You?


Cavern 11: Trick Door

About the Level

  • New material: noun Tile and property Facing

I’m glad that this level was changed to what you see up there, as many people had trouble figuring out what Facing meant and where to put it in the sentence. Now you should see what it means. Try pushing the Ghost. When does it stop working? Why?

Also, we’ve seen Tiles in a lot of levels, but this is the first one in which you can modify it.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Can you push the Ghost all the way to the Key? Can you push the Key all the way to the Ghost? Where exactly do you get stuck?

Specific Hint: You need the Ghost to be pushable up to a very particular point, and then you need to be able to walk through it. You can't change the rules after you cross the Tile, so what rule can you make which is conditional?


Cavern 12: Trapped

About the Level

Question for anyone... why is the rule Belt is not Tele there? You can’t Tele when there is only one of an object anyway, so what exact unintended solution does this prevent?

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Baba facing Wall is a rule. Baba next to Wall is not. What is the difference between those ideas?

Bigger Nudge: Is there a way you can move a Box without access to any Push rule?

Specific Hint: You need to change your teleport destination point so that you appear next to a wall without Facing it.


Cavern 13: Tunnel

About the Level

This might be one of the weirdest levels you’ll ever play. Enjoy!

Hints

Gentle Nudge: How many of the initial rules can be broken up? How many can be modified otherwise?

Bigger Nudge: The Skulls can't harm you if there's no You in the tunnel.

Specific Hint: Remember your solution to Cavern 02, or 01, or whatever it is now. It's "Tour." That solution should tell you what to do here.


Cavern 14: Broken Expectations

About the Level

You won’t see anything technically new in this level, but it features a trick you’ve never seen before and you will use a lot in the endgame, so take notes. (The method used to achieve this trick is not repeated later, but the knowledge will still be useful.)

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Text is not Push, yet you can still move the Text around. Why?

Bigger Nudge: How can you get up to the top part of the level? Will you come back the same way?

Specific Hint #1: Your first objective is to create Flag is Win. Yet you have to change some other rule before you can do that.

Specific Hint #2: If you push "Win" to the left while Text is not Push, what happens? Does this give you a clue as to how to solve this level?


Cavern Extra 1: Coronation

About the Level

In the original version of the level, there wasn’t quite as much Lava, which allowed you to push some text around and create Keke is Win. That possibility has been removed, and now you need to do this level the real - and much harder - way.

Hints

Gentle Nudge: Rock is Defeat, so literally the only way to win is if Text is Win.

Bigger Nudge: Think back to your solution to Cavern 01, or 04, or whatever. It was "Mouse Hole." How did you get the Rock onto the Key then? Could you do the same thing here?

Specific Hint: You need to perform two swaps with one push.


World Complete

Clearing this world opens up the final world, the Mountaintop. If this is the seventh world you’ve cleared, you’ll also open up the final part of the overworld, which you aren’t required to visit at all unless you intend on seeing endgame content. You can complete the game the normal way at any point now. If you want to go to the endgame though, I’d suggest visiting every world, starting with the Chasm.
